Sustainable Office Building

Since construction began in late Fall 2007, our Floyd main office has stood out for its unique design and commitment to sustainability. Located at 718 Franklin Pike, it is one of the few buildings in Southwest Virginia to earn LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Energy Efficiency & Renewable Power

We’ve integrated cutting-edge technologies to reduce energy consumption and harness renewable energy.

Lighting

  • Energy-efficient CFL and LED fixtures throughout the building.

Solar Power

  • 82 photovoltaic panels generate most of our electricity.
  • 2 solar thermal panels heat water.

Daylighting

  • 24 solar tubes bring natural light indoors.
  • Reflective tubing maximizes light efficiency without structural changes.

Geothermal Heating & Cooling

  • 12 geothermal wells regulate indoor temperatures.
  • EPA-endorsed system produces no fossil fuel emissions and eliminates carbon monoxide risks.

Rainwater Harvesting

We collect and reuse rainwater to conserve resources.

Capture

  • An 8000-gallon cistern beneath the building stores roof runoff.

Reuse

  • Flushing toilets.
  • Irrigating landscaping around the property.
  • Washing agency/staff vehicles.
  • Patio water sculpture.
